Replacing the headlight lamp on a Hyundai Elantra 2004 model

WARNING CAUTION You can kill yourself and blow up your car and house if you do this wrong. Legal BS.

So you've found out that Hyundai uses the cheapest disposable parts on their cars. The 10 year limited warrenty, and the bumber to bumper do not cover these type of parts. You've had your vehicle for about 2 years and now your headlight lamp has burned out.

Simple Replacement, right? Wrong.

If you are replacing the driver side lamp, then you must disconnect and remove the battery. Then unscrew the black cover and remove or move it out of the way. Then you unscrew the plastic cover to access the lamp. Unplug the electric connector from the lamp. The lamp is held in place by a spring (doesn't look like a spring) that has two screws holding in the spring.

The spring is only held in place by the screw on one side. On the other, you can squeeze the spring together and it will release from the metal clip that is holding it. No need to unscrew this side.

Remove the old light and make sure you toss it so you don't mix it up with the new light bulb. Do not toss the spring.

Place the new light in. Make sure that the notched part of the light points skywards. While you can force the light in upside down, you will find out that turning the lights on will destroy your new $16 light bulb ($30 for a pair.)

While holding the light in, place the spring back into the screw from which was unscrewed. Using your third hand, screw the spring back. This normally is the hard part, and takes me about an hour.

Now, while squeezing the spring together, place the other side of the spring under the metal latch that holds it in place.

Reconnect the electric connector, screw the plastic cap back into place, replace the battery, and test.

If you are doing the passenger side, you do not have to remove the battery, however your access is more limited by the hood rod and the washer fluid intake. If you have fat fingers, forget about it. Pay someone to replace the lamp.

This first image is the low beam H7 lamp you need.
H7 55 H7 55 ST. Whatever, H7 is the key.
The high beam is H1.

This is the correct way to put the lamp in.
Note the notch is pointed up. Not down!

Who ever designed this spring needs to be retired.
